MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA – A helicopter crashed into the ocean at Miami Beach on Saturday in front of people swimming and people relaxing on South Beach, authorities said. The crash occured at about 1:10 PM (local time) at South Beach, Miami’s most popular beach. Miami Beach Police and Miami Beach Fire responded immediately to calls of a helicopter crash in the ocean near 10th Street, the Miami Beach Police tweeted. According to the police three passengers were inside the helicopter and were transported to the hospital in stable condition.
The crash occured between 9th and 11th Street near Ocean Drive, Local 10 News reports.
“My family was telling me when they saw the helicopter, ‘Anna come, come, come. It’s going down. It’s going down,” witness Ana Diaz said to Local 10 News.
The helicopter – a Robinson R44 with 3 people onboard – went down “under unknown circumstances,” according to the FAA. Two people were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital and are in stable condition, Miami Beach Police said. The third passenger did not require hospitalization.
The identities of the pilot and the owner of the helicopter are unknown.
The FAA is investigating the crash.
