BALTIC SEA – Last week on August 13, a Russian Air Force Su-27 fighter jet – escorting the Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu – ‘chased away’ a Spanish Air Force EF-18 with a pretty dangerous maneuver, by banking close towards the EF-18. According to Russian state-run media, the Spanish fighter jet came too close to the government plane.
In a statement NATO said that the planes came “close to allied airspace,” although they were flying in international airspace. NATO also said the pilot of the Spanish EF-18 did not know who was on board the Russian plane, and that “once identification of the aircraft had taken place, the NATO jets returned to base.”
The Russian defense minister was flying back from Kaliningrad to Moscow, where he attended war games that included troops from China, Iran and Venezuela.
