Passenger dies onboard United Airlines Flight 961 to Newark

SHANNON AIRPORT – February 20, 2019. United Airlines Flight 961 from Frankfurt to Newark diverted to Shannon Airport in Ireland Wednesday for an emergency landing, after an elderly woman stopped breathing.

Flight UA961 was about 2 hours into its journey from Frankfurt Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport when a 71-year old woman suffered breathing problems. According to the Irish Sun other passengers began performing CPR on the woman and an onboard defibrillator was also used.

The B767-424(ER) with registration N68061 diverted to Shannon Airport in Western Ireland, where it was met by an ambulance, although the passenger was pronounced dead shortly after the flight landed. It’s believed she suffered a heart attack.


Flight UA961 was about 2 hours into its journey from Frankfurt to Newark when the crew made contact with air traffic controllers in Ireland. The flight turned around and began to route directly to Shannon Aiport.

A United Airlines spokesperson said in a statement: “United Flight 961 travelling from Frankfurt to Newark diverted to Shannon due to a medical emergency onboard. “Medical personnel met the aircraft at the gate. We are deeply saddened to learn that our customer passed away and we are assisting the family.”

United Flight 961 then continued onto Newark Liberty International Airport, where the B767 arrived around three and a half hours late.
