A WESTJET BOEING 737 HAS SKIDDED OFF RUNWAY AT HALIFAX AIRPORT

GOFFS, CANADA – A WestJet Boeing 737-800 skidded off a runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) on the peninsula Nova Scotia in Canada. The accident occured in a snow storm on Sunday. There were no injuries.

Flight WS248 from Toronto to Halifax landed on Sunday morning around noon on runway 14 with 172 passengers and seven crew members on board, when it skidded off the runway and stopped in the snow-covered grass. After 3 hours all passengers were safely evacuated from the passenger jet.

The weather conditions were bad at the time of landing – which is currently not remarkable in Canada, due to the many winter storms – but the exact cause of the accident has yet to be investigated. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has sent a research team to the airport.

As a result of the incident, 3 other flights were canceled.
