ANCHORAGE – Due to a mid-air collision between 2 floatplanes off the coast of Alaska, 4 people were killed and 10 injured on Monday, the US Coast Guard said. On Tuesday 2 more bodies were found, bringing the number of people killed to 6.

Ten passengers had to go to the hospital for treatment. Three of the injured passengers are in critical condition.

The crash occured near a popular tourist lodge that conducts excursions to nearby Misty Fjords National Monument. Aboard the 2 planes – a de Havilland DHC-2 and DHC-3 from Taquan Air – were passengers of a Princess Cruises cruise ship taking a round trip.

The accident happened after 1 of the 2 planes descended by several hundred feet, officials said on Tuesday.

Alaska has many floatplanes in service, making it easier to reach remote areas, but also by landing on water in lakes and rivers. The air crash occured at the southernmost tip of Alaska.
