LEUTASCH, AUSTRIA – Three people died on Thursday in a crash of a single-engine aircraft in the Tyrolean Alps, not far from the border with Germany, police spokesman Stefan Eder confirmed Tiroler Tageszeitung Online Friday morning.

The Austrian police spokesman was not yet able to make any statements about the identity of the victims or about the route and origin of the small aircraft.

The weather in the area was good. Victims should return during the morning. An autopsy was ordered. The victims’ identity will be known only in a few days.

The aircraft had flown into a rock face at an altitude of about 2,300 meters (7,500 feet). Authorities say the plane burned completely after crashing and it was not immediately clear where it was registered. The type of aircraft was also unclear.

The plane crashed at about 5:30 P.M. local time in the mountains near the town of Leutasch.

Leutasch is a municipality in the northern part of the district Innsbruck-Land in the Austrian state of Tyrol, about 30 km northwest of the city of Innsbruck. Tyrol is a historical region in the Alps in Northern Italy and western Austria.
